Safety Issues
The automotive replacement glass industry must
meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Most importantly, the
windshield has become a critical part of the vehicles safety systems.
 | Windshield contributes as much as
sixty percent to the support of the roof during the Roof Crush Resistance (FMVSS 216)
and
the crash test (FMVSS
212). |
 | Your airbag deploys at
speeds of 150 to 200 miles per hour. This energy must be absorbed by the
windshield if you and your passengers are to be protected. Improper curing
times (also known as "safe drive away time") could result in
being ejected from your vehicle in the event of an accident. |
 | Windshields are designed to prevent
the occupant from ejection; |
 | A newly installed windshield may
need to sit for as much as 24 hours (known as
"safe drive away time"
before it will pass Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. |
 | Driving your vehicle immediately
after a windshield installation could be a deadly mistake
if the proper curing times have not been allowed. If the adhesive is
not cured it could cause ejection from the force of your body and or your
air bags. Your windshield could also shift slightly causing it to leak
from driving before it has properly cured. |
Installation Methods
 | Full cut Method Installation
means
removing almost all the original bead of urethane after the glass is removed,
cutting as close to the pinchweld as possible and leaving a very thin layer of
the original bead intact. Priming the pinchweld to seal the body and
provide the best possible surface for bonding. Then a
larger bead of new urethane is applied, and the new glass installed. |
Stewart Glass and Mirror, Inc only
performs the FULL CUT METHOD on all installations.
 | Short
cut Method Installation (Sometimes
called the Close cut Method) means removing a windshield by cutting as close to
the glass as possible, leaving the original bead of urethane in
place. The
installer then puts a new bead of urethane on top of the old urethane and
installs, the new glass. Does close cutting cause RUST?
Take a look at the results of a poor installation. |
Stewart Glass and Mirror, Inc NEVER
uses this method.
